Combine Files

The Combine Files tool allows you to merge multiple GPX or FIT files into a single track. This is particularly useful when you stopped and restarted your GPS device during an activity.

When to Use

This tool is helpful when:

  • Your GPS device accidentally stopped recording mid-activity
  • You paused your device for a lunch break and started a new recording
  • You have separate files for different segments of the same ride/hike
  • You want to merge activities from different days into a single file
  • You switched between devices during an activity

How to Use

  1. Click the Combine Files button to open the tool
  2. If you already have a file loaded, it will be added automatically
  3. Click Add File to add more files (you can select multiple at once)
  4. Drag and drop the files to reorder them if needed
  5. Choose your gap handling preference
  6. Review the combined preview
  7. Click Combine to create the merged track

File Order

The order of files matters! Files are combined sequentially from top to bottom. Make sure your files are in chronological order (first segment first).

To reorder files:

  • Click and drag the grip handle () on the left side of each file
  • Drop the file at its new position

Gap Handling

When combining files, you can choose how to handle the time gap between them:

Keep Original Timestamps

The original timestamps from each file are preserved exactly as recorded. This means:

  • If there was a 30-minute lunch break between files, that gap will remain
  • Speed and pace calculations will include the stopped time
  • Time-based charts will show the actual real-world timeline

Use this when: You want an accurate record of when everything happened, including rest periods.

Close Gaps (Make Continuous)

Timestamps are adjusted so that each file continues immediately after the previous one (with a 1-second gap). This means:

  • The activity appears as one continuous recording
  • Total elapsed time equals actual moving time
  • Speed and pace calculations are based on moving time only

Use this when: You want the combined file to look like a single uninterrupted activity, ignoring breaks.

Mixed File Formats

You can combine GPX and FIT files together! Since GPXFIT converts all files to the same internal format, mixing formats works seamlessly:

  • GPX + GPX files
  • FIT + FIT files
  • GPX + FIT files (any combination)

After combining, you can export to either GPX or FIT format.

Preview

The tool shows you a preview of the combined result:

  • Route map: Each file's track is shown in a different color
  • Elevation chart: Shows the combined elevation profile with color-coded segments
  • Statistics: Total distance, duration, ascent, descent, and point count

Tips

  • You can remove files by clicking the trash icon on the right
  • The preview updates automatically when you add, remove, or reorder files
  • Check the gap handling option carefully - it affects how times are calculated
  • Use the map toggle to see each segment's location on a real map
